You don’t need to completely overhaul your lifestyle to get healthier – little changes can go a long way. Consider these 7 small changes to improve your health that you can tackle this week!
Monday – Start the week of right by getting up early and doing a half hour of exercise. Walk, run, go to the gym, use a home workout DVD, jump rope – anything you want! By starting today with a healthy decision, it’ll propel healthy choices throughout the remainder of the week.
Tuesday – Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go today. Sip regularly and keep yourself hydrated! Sometimes when your body is dehydrated, it mistakes the sensation of thirst for hunger – but drinking water regularly can help stave off this effect.
Wednesday – Choose a new fruit or vegetable at the grocery store – either something you’ve never tried, something that you’ve had a restaurant and been intimidated to cook yourself, or a special seasonal item that you don’t regularly purchase. Try searching websites like Eating Well, Cooking Light, or Pinterest for ideas on how to use it. Different fruits and vegetables provide an array of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals for your body. And who knows – you may discover a new favorite!
Thursday – Pay attention to how often you wash your hands throughout the day. With cold season approaching, those nasty germs will start to spread more rapidly. While you might find it easy to remember to wash your hands after using the bathroom, you also should remember to always wash them regularly throughout the day and before eating anything. Not convinced? One study found that computer keyboards and desk areas contained more bacteria than the average toilet seat!
Friday – Heading out for happy hour? Don’t let your healthy habits slip up as you start the weekend! The calories in alcoholic beverages can add up quickly, and can also reduce our control when it comes to dietary choices. If you’re going to indulge in a drink, consider one or two glasses of wine or light beer – and alternate them with a glass of water. Skip the drinks like frozen margaritas and daiquiris - they've got a shocking amount of sugar and some contain over 500 calories!
Saturday – Find an activity that’s both fun and active to do today, either by yourself, with your spouse, or with friends! A few ideas:
Sunday – Continue your week of small changes to improve your health by taking time to rejuvenate your spiritual and mental well-being. Meditate for 10 minutes today, create a vision board highlighting your goals and dreams, or try a yoga class. And be sure to go to bed at a reasonable time tonight so you’re refreshed for the day ahead tomorrow!
