We got up at 5AM this morning, packed up our race gear, grabbed a bagel, and headed down to Onset. Race parking was fairly easy for us in the lot close to the start. Got the bikes off the car, went to do a last minute pump of the tires before heading over and – surprise! My bike had a flat.
By the time we got to registration, we were already soaked and cold but looking forward to the race! Headed down to body marking and heard that the swim was called off because the water was too dangerous. They changed the format from triathlon to duathlon, so instead of the original 1/3 mile swim, we’d have a 1 mile run. This would be followed by the other regular segments – a 10 mile bike and 5K. I was a little disappointed since the swim is probably my favorite part, but judging by the looks of the water, people definitely would have struggled.
They had the first run go off in waves, which was good so it didn’t get too congested. First 1 mile run went well. Grabbed my bike at T1 and headed out for the 10 mile ride. I was really nervous about this part, since I’ve never ridden in any rain before, let alone heavy rain. There were some puddles and a little slickness, but I remembered to take it easy on the turns and downhill, and made sure to be aware of the surroundings. The rain actually let up towards the end of the bike, which was nice. Got to T2 and headed out quickly to the 5K portion. It was a nice run and I felt good while on the course!
Really happy with my performance overall (can you tell from my big smile below?): 1:24:34! Splits as follows:
1 mile run: 9:25 (That’s super fast for a slow runner like me!)
10 mile bike: 39:11
5K run: 33:44
I haven’t even mentioned the best part yet… guess who participated in the post-race dance contest at the end of the awards ceremony? That’s right, this girl. And I WON! Scored myself a free xterra wetsuit, which will be awesome to have as a backup (or maybe my primary – I’ve got to see which fits better). I don’t know if I could ever top the performance of “the worm” at a max performance event last year by my friend Patti, but I’m pretty excited I held my own versus my competitors.
And (drumroll please)...for your viewing pleasure, here’s me making a fool of myself (glad Terry caught this on camera)! :)
